The Village Association (VA) are pleased to announce that four new road signs were unveiled at various locations in The Village, on Sunday 31st July 2022. The Village was once home to Caterham Barracks (for the Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish and Welsh Guards) and the new road signs have been installed to reflect the rich heritage of the site. The remaining eleven new road signs will be installed over the next few weeks.
The idea was presented to the VA by Michael Pritchard, a long-standing Village resident. Michael’s proposal was accepted and consent was obtained from Tandridge District Council to replace the existing road signs.
The VA wishes to thank everyone involved in this initiative which we hope will raise awareness of the Village’s rich history. The costs for the design, purchase and installation of the 15 signs were sponsored by the following local organisations:
• Caterham Barracks Community Trust
• Caterham Hill Parish Council
• Danny Gallivan Trust
• Qdime (Hazelvine)
• Simon Nunn & Associates
• Village Association
• Vistry South East (Linden)
The unveiling day event was attended by Village residents and guests of the Village Association (VA) and the VA thanks the following people for their part in unveiling the road signs:
Vicky Robinson, Chair of Caterham Hill Parish Council
Major James Gatehouse, Regimental Adjutant of the Grenadier Guards
Lawrence Nicholls, cousin of Harry Nicholls after whom Nicholls Close is named
Dick Moran, CEO of Caterham Barracks Community Trust
The VA also thanks:
• The Arc (originally the Barracks Gym) who provided a wonderful venue and managed the catering for the unveiling party to meet and then regroup after the unveiling event.
• The Arc, Tesco, CSE Chatterbox and Simon Nunn & Co.Ltd for their contributions towards the catering.
• The Bourne Society (the local history society for north east Surrey) who produced a wonderful exhibition which is now housed in the Arc. The series of boards gives a fantastic insight to the history of Caterham Barracks and also describes the careers and brave actions of the individual Guards after whom some of the roads are named. The Arc welcomes all visitors to see the exhibition.
• Sonia Hunt, our wonderful Towncrier.
• Mark Bishop, a Village resident, who did the photography.
• Members of the Coldstream and Grenadier Guards who helped to find information on the background of road names and who provided the regimental images on each road sign.
